Teignbridge Recycled Art In Landscape T.R.A.I.L.2008 features art made out of all sorts of reclaimed materials, by 44 artists, children, and Community groups. This year the spectacular cliff-top site of Jason's Garden, in Teignmouth, Devon, is included in T.R.A.I.L., the Garden was created by the Pope family as a Memorial to Jason who was killed in Angola 10 years ago.
For this powerful and emotive site, Jan has created a colourful and ambiguous figure, TROUBLED WATER, from a multitude of discarded materials- old broken playground equipment and toys, guns, tools, ornaments, the bizarre and toxic detritus of our throwaway society, sitting in a pool of floating plastic.
Pumped water flows through the sculpture - a reminder both of the playful, healing power of water, and a comment on the huge quantities of plastic waste now circulating in the oceans. As well as adding movement and sound, this water (kept clear by extract of barley straw donated by Aqua Hydrotech Ltd is a resource for wildlife during the summer.
T.R.A.I.L. visitors can look across the sea to the South, the direction of Africa, through viewing spaces in the sculpture, and activate the water to drip and spray by working the hand pump.....interactive sculpture for children to soak their unsuspecting parents!!
From 10th August, Jan's work with discarded plastic is also in the T.R.A.I.L. indoor exhibition at Tomorrow's Teignmouth, where she is showing the Four Seasons.
