Sea Roots weekend, 19th and 20th of September

Lost rubbish becomes found art for Sea Fest

The third weekend of Sea Fest, Torbay’s marine heritage festival, will feature art made out of seashore rubbish, sand sculpture, music and film.

The Sea Roots weekend, on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September, focuses on the connection between the sea and art. Activities will be taking place at Living Coasts, Torre Abbey and Torre Abbey Sands.

On Saturday members of the public can join local artist Jan O’Highway on Torre Abbey Sands on a shore line search for objects which will become part of a brand new artwork. Jan will be on the beach between 10:00am and 3:00pm collecting materials for Sunday and making some temporary pieces to accompany the sand sculpting that will be taking place on the beach.

On Sunday Jan will be at Torre Abbey between 10:00am and 1:00pm. The Abbey recently hosted Antony Gormley’s ‘Field for the British Isles’; Jan will be working with the public to create a dramatic piece of art made entirely from materials found the previous day. Once completed the piece will take pride of place at Living Coasts.

There will also be sand sculpting on Torre Abbey Sands and a wide range of activities based at Living Coasts, including film screenings, music workshops, craft activities and the prize giving for the Sea Fest photography competition.

There will be a film collage of footage that examines Torbay’s marine heritage, created by the South West Film and Television Archive. Music workshops are being run by Hugh Nankivell and will explore the sounds of the sea.

The Sea Fest free festival, which is taking place on weekends during September, explores our connection with the sea through four themed weekends looking at history, food, art and the future. The festival received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
